R4 History quicky review

The original R4 card was released in early 2007 . The R4 Card is a second generation flash card designed specially for Nintendo ds concolse.  It had an enormous success in 2007 and 2008. it was by far the most popular card at this time , due to their as following :

  • Flush fitting slot 1 card ,adopt spring memory slot
  • Supports Action Replay cheat
  • Supports auto-DLDI patching
  • Supports the Wi-Fi connection and Download Play.
  • Support Moonshell media player

But good times don't last long , The R4 has been banned from sale, due to its promotion of illegal software piracy. In mid 2008, the original R4DS Team stopped production. However, many manufacturers are now using the name "R4" to sell their product …even though very few R4 clones are actually clones of the R4—most are clones of the DSTTi or Acekard 2i...

R4 SDHC

The R4 DS Card has a bigest dis-advantage - The R4DS cann't support Micro-SD cards with larger capacity than 2GB.That is to say that R4 DS cann't read SDHC Card due to harware limlitation .

In this case , certain clones add this functionality, There exist several clones of the R4 card that are capable of using SDHC cards. but some studies have suggested that certain types of these cards have high failure rates. But "R4 SDHC" from www.r4i-sdhc.com , is reported to be reliable. The R4 SDHC defeated all competitors in the industry and became an outstanding one. In 2008 ,the R4 SDHC became the best-selling R4 Card for Nintendo DS .

R4i SDHC Card

The R4i SDHC was the first ever DSi compatible card to be produced for the homebrew market. It was released in the second quarter of 2009 after the general release of the Nintendo DSi console. The R4i SDHC support MicroSD Card up to 32GB , be able to run Moonshell to play media, and frequent software updates.

When Nintendo released the 1.4 DSi firmware update in late July 2009, these cards were blocked. The R4 team then made a new R4 card, the R4i-SDHC V1.4 , which is one of early card for DSi V1.4. Then ,Nintendo released their V1.4.1 firmware , the R4i SDHC V1.4 can’t support DSi V1.4.1 due to the hardware limitation . The R4i SDHC Team released R4i SDHC V1.4.1 in stead of R4i SDHC V1.4 . You have to buy another R4i SDHC card for your DSi V1.4.1 .While other cards simply release upgrade patches. This made lots of users angry. and lead to lost many potential customer .

Compared with R4i Gold (main competitors), it’s a big weakness .However , With the continuous development of R4i SDHC technology, They quickly resolved the issues They released a patch for R4i V1.4.1 .that means player don’t have to buy a new card . They also done that for V1.4.2 .

As you know, Player must update the R4i SDHC Card on the lower DSi Consloe. for the convenience of customers, the factory upgrade the kernel and improved the cards. They still released a new R4i SDHC Card -- R4i SDHC V1.4.2

When Nintendo DSi update the firware to V1.4.3 ,the R4i-SDHC Team released the patch for R4i SDHC V1.4.2 to support DSi V1.4.3 ,and then they release R4i SDHC V1.4.3 Cards
